THE PHYSICS LEARNING CENTER (PLC)

The Physics Learning Center, part of Missouri S&T's LEAD Program, is an open, student-centered learning environment that encourages active learning and teamwork between the students. The PLC is staffed by experienced faculty and peer instructors who act as guides rather than tutors. They employ Socratic methods, giving students hints as to how to proceed and drawing attention to errors in thinking.

The Physics Learning Center provides learning assistance for several physics courses during scheduled afternoon and evening hours. Students voluntarily attend the PLC to improve their mastery of the course material and to hone skills needed for success in their academic and in their professional careers.

The Physics Learning Center has been an overwhelming success. Data collected over many years consistently show that students who attend achieve significantly higher course grades than students who do not. The format fosters collaboration and camaraderie, and the active peer-learning techniques develop the students’ understanding and problem-solving skills. Many students observe that their performance immediately improves once they begin attending the PLC.

The PLC also provides an important professional development opportunity for the Peer Learning Assistants. The pedagogical training and the teaching and leadership skills they acquire enhance their undergraduate education, enrich their resumes, and translate to workplace or graduate school.
